- Step two: Pass an admittance test and receive admittance into veterinary school.
- Step three: Receive a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. This is typically a four-year postgraduate degree with a focus on anatomy and physiology, nutrition, pharmacology, animal science and more.
- Step four: Pass a national licensure exam.
What is a licensed veterinary technician (LVT)?
LVT stands for licensed veterinary technician. In order to become an LVT, an individual must attend a college with an accredited program in veterinary technology and receive an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. Course work includes biology; microbiology; chemistry; anatomy and physiology; pathology; radiology; surgical and medical nursing; anesthesia; dentistry; and animal studies in companion, farm and laboratory animals. Upon completion of these studies, students are required to take a national and/or state exam, which enables them to obtain certification, registration and licensing. A technician works under the supervision of a veterinarian.
