
When a blood transfusion is needed to save a dog’s life, Flannery Animal Hospital calls upon its blood donor team for help. The blood donor team is comprised of employee and client owned dogs who donate blood when an emergency arises.
Program Qualifications
Your dog may be a candidate for our Blood Donor Program if he or she meets the following requirements:
- A friendly disposition
- Up-to-date on vaccinations
- Between 55 and 100 pounds
- Currently on heartworm and tick prevention medications
- Between 1 and 8 years of age
- Willing to be called at any time
- Has never received a blood transfusion
- Is spayed or neutered
- Females must never have had a litter
- Has no medical problems
Program Benefits
Dogs participating in the Blood Donor Program receive:
- Free annual heartworm testing
- Free annual blood work (including complete blood count, serum profile,
tick serology and hemobartonella testing)
- One free unit-dose of heartworm preventative
- One free bath and nail trim after each donation
- An “I’m a blood donor!” collar tag
- The knowledge that you’ve helped to save a life!
